The Extra Mile Homes Program

Transitional Housing

Love Columbia established Extra Mile Homes in 2015 to provide transitional housing for families with children experiencing homelessness.
Since the program’s inception, over 70 families have reset their lives and secured permanent housing.

Families in the Extra Mile Home Program receive 4 to 9 months of supported housing in a transitional home environment with intensive financial, housing, and career coaching tailored to the families' needs and goals. Each adult has an individualized plan that includes goals such as furthering their education, advancing their career,  securing reliable transportation, strengthening their family relationships, improving personal wellness, and moving toward family stability.

During their time in the program, the family saves 30% of their income to pay off past debt that may be a barrier to securing housing and to use toward future housing expenses such as deposit and first month's rent.

“It is so nice to have a kitchen to cook for my kids and a yard for them to play in. Love Columbia stepped in just when I had nowhere else to turn.”

Extra Mile Homes has been possible because of the generosity of the community. The program has primarily utilized homes loaned by churches and individuals or leased by individual donors. Local donors and City of Columbia have made it possible for Love Columbia to own three homes, two of which are now part of our downtown property.

It has been our desire to cluster our transitional homes near our main, downtown office to allow for greater accessibility to our services and more frequent interaction between staff and program participants.

Thanks to City and County ARPA funding and the generosity of The Crossing Church members, this dream will be realized in 2025, with the completion of a ten-unit transitional housing facility on our property. The ten-plex, located at 1221 E Ash St Columbia, MO 65201, will consist of six 3-bedroom units and four 2-bedroom units.
