Free English class for Spanish speaking individuals

Weekly free English Language Learning classes for Spanish speakers at three different levels. Classes will start Monday, September 8th and meet every Monday from 6-7:30 pm through May. English Language Learners (ELL) - Columbia Area Career Center Adult Ed

The Columbia Area Career Center Adult Education and Literacy program provides FREE online and in-person classes for adult students trying to better their English language skills. Classes begin in September and run through May. New students who register and take placement tests can be added to in-progress classes every few weeks.

Language Partners Program

Note: Language Partners Program is for University of Missouri students, staff, faculty, and extends to their family members. They do not have the capacity or staff to extend this to residents of Columbia who do not attend or work for the University of Missouri.

Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The library is free and open to everyone. Those interested in checking out materials and using the free online resources may apply for a free library card. Apply online or at the library.

In addition to being able to check out books, you can borrow music CDs, DVDs, magazines, early learning kits for children, fiber arts kits, Memory Care kits, Parent Packs for new and expectant parents, STEAM kits, telescopes and mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. You can reserve most items by placing a hold online or at any library, and then pick them up inside the library or via curbside pickup.

There are many opportunities taking place at the library that don’t require a library card including programs for all ages, a quiet reading room and a special interactive play area for children. You may take advantage of the free Wi-Fi in the building or use one of the public computers. To use the computers, you either need a library card or a guest pass. You may also scan, make copies and print documents for a small fee.

NEW Nov. 2025 - Read to Succeed, a program that teaches adults who struggle with reading. The program focuses on teaching adults who are 18 and older whose primary language is English. Each student will be paired with a volunteer instructor, most of whom will have a background in education. All learning materials are free for the student.

The Read to Succeed program has locations at Columbia Public Library, Callaway County Public Library in Fulton, Holts Summit Public Library and Southern Boone Public Library in Ashland. An online option is also available.
