CHA provides housing assistance to over 1,900 families in Columbia and Boone County. Families pay 30% of their adjusted household income for rent.

To apply for housing you will need: a completed application,  a current mailing address (You must keep your mailing address current at all times), photo IDs for every household member 18 or older, birth certificates for every household member 17 or under, Social Security cards for every household member, and proof of income – 3 consecutive pay stubs or SSA benefits statement.

Things that can cause your application to be denied: Violent or drug-related criminal activity in the past five years; Outstanding debts to housing authorities; Prior terminations at housing authorities or a number of evictions; and Negative reports from previous landlords. If your application is denied for any reason, you may request a hearing to appeal the decision. For more information on denial hearings, please call 573-443-2556, ex. 1111.

Waiting list preferences: A preference is given to Veterans who have served in all branches of the U.S. military. A preference is given to families where at least one adult works 20 hours or more per week, or where the head of household, co-head or spouse has a disability or is elderly (55 or older). Families who qualify for a preference move up the wait list faster than other families.

Depending on availability of units, your wait could be six months or longer. To check your place on the wait list, bring your photo ID to the information window at 201 Switzler Street.

If you are a resident in one of CHA’s properties, please call to inquire about how you can get diapers through them.

The Family Self-Sufficiency Programs help families develop five-year plans for self-sufficiency.

Newly renovated in 2017, the Bear Creek Townhomes offer 1, 2, 3, & 4 bedroom single family homes, duplexes, and four-plexes. Conveniently located close to the center of Columbia with good access to various goods and services as well as employment opportunities. No cross traffic. The apartments are very energy efficient as a result of extensive renovations.

Bryant Walkway I & II Family Sites

Bryant Walkway is a newly renovated affordable housing community offering 54 units of housing. CHA’s Bryant Walkway apartments are split into two projects: Bryant Walkway I & Bryant Walkway II:
-Bryant Walkway I contains 54 Units which includes 11 one-bedroom, 29 two-bedroom, 12 three-bedroom and 2 four-bedroom apartments.
-Bryant Walkway II contains 36 Units which includes 26 one-bedroom, 6 two-bedroom, 4 three-bedroom.

The Stuart Parker Apartments are newly renovated, 1, 2, 3, & 4 bedroom units located in the heart of Columbia.  All apartments are smoke-free.

Rent is based on 30% of the household’s income (Employment or Social Security). To get a rough idea of your rent, add up your income – not including food stamps – multiply by 0.30 (30%) and divide the total by 12 months.  You will need to pay gas and electric costs, even if you are not employed. CHA pays for water, sewer and trash. Deposit is due in full before move in once notification of an available unit.
