How to Navigate a Job Fair (Acceptable Etiquette)

  • DRESS APPROPIATELY. Employers are very conscious about how you dress. Business Casual is generally acceptable in lieu of suits or uniforms.

    • A nice, clean pair of regular shoes A pair of slacks, i.e.

    • Dockers and long sleeve shirt for men.

    • Similar attire for women.

  • FRESH BREATH. Bad breath is a distraction that is easily avoided.

  • BE ORGANIZED.

    • Have copies of RESUME to give to employers.

    • Have a pen and paper to take notes.

    • Remember your glasses if reading is difficult.

  • REVIEW the companies attending and establish a plan.

  • JOB OFFER’s are seldom presented at a Job Fair, but this is an opportunity to network, make an impression and set appointment for a later time.

  • FOLLOW UP! If they ask you to fill out an application, remember that pen you brought with you, now is your chance to use it.

  • BE CONFIDENT. These employers are looking for the right employee. Act, talk and look like someone they would like to hire.

  • INTRODUCE YOURSELF: “Hi, my name is ___________________”.

    • “I’ve been doing _______________, but I’m interested in your company. What positions are you trying to fill?”

    • Be prepared to tell them a little about yourself, what you’re interested in, what you want to do.

    • IT’S OK to ask questions and/or ask for a business card. Remember to write down who you spoke with and information you obtained about the company or the job.
